Maza Praises House Passage Of Legislation
Designed To Stop ‘Venue Shopping’

PENNSBURG, October 8, 2002 — Jim Maza, the Democratic candidate for the State Senate in the 24th District today praised the House passage of Senate Bill 138, a measure designed to prevent plaintiffs and their attorneys in medical malpractice cases from ‘venue shopping’ for juries inclined to grant large awards.

“It was past time for the General Assembly to close the legal loopholes that allowed malpractice suits to be tried in front of Philadelphia juries, even if the negligence did not occur there,” said Maza.

“I call on the Senate to pass this legislation before the end of the legislative session, but if they don’t I will enthusiastically support identical legislation as Senator.”

“If the injury occurred in Montgomery or Bucks County, the case should be heard before a Montgomery or Bucks County jury. To seek to try the case in another county is just plain wrong and unfair and I strongly support legislation that seeks to stop those practices.”
